Joe Biden’s Red-Tinged Speech

W.J. Astore

President Joe Biden denounced “extreme MAGA ideology” at a recent speech at Independence Hall in Philadelphia. I’ve been to Independence Hall, but never did I picture it like this, lit in a garish red light:

Readers here know I’m critical of Biden and Donald Trump. I don’t want either man to get a second term. And MAGA, as in make America great again, is a movement that has cult-like elements in the way it elevates Trump as some kind of leader/savior figure. Being critical of MAGA is one thing, but Biden’s speech had all the subtlety of the red-tinged image above.

Having watched too many episodes of “Star Trek,” what I think of here is Red Alert. But painting all Trump supporters with the same red brush only aggravates tension and division.

Sorry, I don’t see my MAGA neighbor as my enemy. He or she is a fellow American, probably one who’s frustrated with the system as it exists today and is seeking an alternative to politics as usual. The shameful thing is our country’s political duopoly, which offers only two choices, Biden or a Biden clone versus Trump or a Trump clone. Maybe the “enemy within” is the duopoly itself?

Biden’s speech was disheartening. The way to win people over is not to paint your rival in red. Give people hope. Give them meaningful reforms. A $15 federal minimum wage. Affordable health care. Higher education that doesn’t lead to huge personal debt. Environmental policies that preserve the earth and address climate change. An end to gargantuan military budgets and overseas wars. Heck, I’ll settle for potable drinking water in Jackson, Mississippi and Flint, Michigan.

Railing against an “enemy” is easy. Sharing the fruits of America equitably among all Americans is the real challenge. Biden pushed a big red “easy” button that placed his followers on red alert against the MAGA foe, as if they weren’t our fellow Americans but a quasi-Klingon empire of aliens out to attack and conquer. It’s a move both wrong and wrongheaded. It’s also yet one more reminder that America needs new political parties and a new direction.

  1. Since Biden is a supposedly Devote Catholic, and Trump is venerated as having Christ-like status with the hard core Devotees in his Cult of Personality, I think both will have a lot of explaining and justification to do before God for violating what is essentially the Christian Message and Purpose Paul, the most anti-Christ when he was named Saul, writes after his conversion as the most passionate advocate of Christ Jesus.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them.
    Wherefore remember, that you being in Time PAST Gentiles in the flesh, who are called UN-circumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;

That at that time you were without Christ, being Aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
But now in Christ Jesus you who sometimes were far off, are made close by the blood of Christ.
    For he is our PEACE, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

    Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making PEACE;
And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
    Ephesians 2

We’ve been saying The Lord’s Prayer for almost 2000 years, ‘Thy kingdom come, thy Will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven.’
It will never arrive if the People don’t do the Will as it appears this World is headed in the opposite direction.

          1. Ray adherents to the Christian religion have been indeed saying the Lords Prayer for 2,000 years, and preaching that adherence to their religion will bring peace. Breaking down the middle wall of partitions between us as you say. It has not.

2,000-years is a very long time. How long do you reckon we should give it? Isn’t it about time we gave on the idea as a lost cause? After all one could surely argue that atheism has been as successful, or even more successful, in bringing about peace than any religion.

      1. To Jews in those Times, Gentiles were considered somewhat unclean and inferior to a Jew being UN-Circumcised.

What those verses say is through the Christ Spirit there is no longer any difference between Jew and Gentile in God’s View.

When Jesus was busted for overturning the tables on the Bankers and Merchants working the Shopping Mall on the Jewish Temple property, the Priests with the Temple Guards demanded to know who gave him the Authority to do what he did?
He answered directly, ‘The House of my Father is a House of Prayer for ALL Nations, and you have made it a Den of Thieves!’
He was declaring Jews and Israel no longer have any exclusivity with God.
        They had to silence him.

But Dennis, the most important line in my comment is this, “For he is our PEACE, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of partition between us”
Extrapolated, the means if the Christ Spirit is Truly in anyone, it breaks down the Walls separating not only Jew and Gentile, but ALL People, just what Bill’s article is about.

For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

You know if the authors who wrote these scriptures thought they had a very important message for ALL men, why didn’t they write them in plain language that was easily understood by ALL men?

            1. Come on Dennis…. You’re smart enough! I can’t believe you don’t recognize the metaphor/allegory in “circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit,”

Paul was arguing cutting off the end of your penis by the hands of men is nothing in comparison to the circumcision of the heart that comes with embodying the Christ Spirit Jesus 1st revealed then and now.

What I don’t understand is it seems so elementary to me.

              1. Way too many metaphor/allegory’s Ray. Cutting off the end of your penis is very real. Circumcision of the heart is not real. Just another allegory. Nobody has ever experienced circumcision of his heart. Paul’s arguing that something real is comparable to something unreal is a non-sequitur. A weird mixed metaphor if you like.

What I don’t understand is if these are really the words of an all knowing God, why he was not smart enough to realize these weird metaphors and allegories would be subject to misinterpretation. And why he did not use plain simple language that ALL his people would be sure to understand without confusion.

  2. I was in a local grocery store yesterday looking at the prepackaged shrimp. There was another shopper, likely about my age, there in a motorized cart. He was telling me how good the shrimp are and asking if I have ever gotten them. He said he buys a half pound for himself, a $4.00 purchase–as a treat, which is what he can afford with his food stamps. Then, he proceeded to say he has no use for Biden and doesn’t understand why he (Biden) has not increased the food stamp allotment given the increased cost of food and everything else, that $300. worth of food stamps would now only purchase about $200. in food. I told him that Biden is not really the one who has control of that, that Congress is responsible for those issues and changing the amounts. He then said he doesn’t understand why Congress doesn’t do something to help people more. He also expanded his target list and allowed as how he has no use for Trump or that My Pillow guy either. He went on to say that all of these people who are worth billions of dollars will never be able to spend it all, like the owner of the Weis chain who won’t live long enough to spend it and should pay their workers more instead. I noted that all this seems to be the reason for much that is at issue in the country: wages, health care, and so on.

He said he is thinking of moving to Ireland since he has dual citizenship and can’t stand this country anymore. I mentioned that many others feel the same but can’t afford the cost, and was thinking that he likely can’t either if he is disabled and on food stamps. He stated his great grandfather (maybe?) came here as an indentured servant, which is why he has dual citizenship. However, many of us are way too old to become indentured servants to get away from the US, and how many other countries want our problems.

As a “theoretically” Christian nation, we are failing miserably. I agree with you; it is quite likely the duopoly that is the real problem, but the new battle is attempting to overcome the two party prevailing mindset. That fight means convincing people on both sides that “we”, the affected populace ourselves, are not the real enemy.

(The Day After Kansas City was incinerated in the clip above will be TOO LATE!)

These are only brief excerpts from the much longer record.
Glad to be still alive 2 Generations later, the more I read in the MSM and Alternate Media, more and more People, including many on this Site, are beginning to see what that 47 year record says.

“He came to town for the Republican National Convention and will stay until the election in November TO DO GOD’S BIDDING: To tell the World, from Kansas City, this country has been found wanting and its days are numbered […] He gestured toward a gleaming church dome. “The gold dome is the symbol of BABYLON,” he said.” […] He wanted to bring to the Public’s attention an “idea being put out subtly and deceptively” by the government that we have to get prepared for a War with Russia.”

That 1976 FUTURE is NOW with the Revelation of the details GENERALLY unfolding in the spirit of the letter.
The World is waking up to see Americans may hasten “its days are numbered” part of the 1976 Vision, and waits with bated breath.

With the benefit of 45 years hindsight, the last 8 years of intensified FBI, Military, Intelligence and Think Tank “experts” on TV constantly, unanimously, demonizing Putin and Russia, with no dissent allowed, the People have been prepared.
Few will recognize “this country has been found wanting and its days are numbered” as the 1st 2 parts of the 3 part “Writing on the Wall” record.

The 1st 2 parts deal with Economics. The 3rd part is Political, telling of the decline of Babylon now called Iraq, and the rise of Persia now called Iran.
The Iranian Revolution happened 29 months after the September 13, 1976 record which also published these words pointing to the FUTURE,

The article continues in quotation marks, ¨There are 30 months before the fate of the world will be sealed with EITHER Destruction OR the Universal Brotherhood of Man,¨ he said. ¨The 30 month figure concerned a Treaty between Israel and Egypt.¨

NOTE: This does not say Armageddon happens in 30 months from the article.

Not 29 or 31, but exactly 30 months later, in March 1979, history shows a Treaty between Israel and Egypt was signed. The Camp David Accord. History shows talks broke down on the 12th day and no Treaty was to be signed. Begin and Sadat were leaving. It was on the 13th Day, as in the date of the Article and the picture accompanying it, an unexpected window of opportunity appeared and opened the way for the Treaty to be signed.

This signified the Universal Brotherhood part of the quote.
A destructive WAR with Iran is still in Israel’s playbook in addition to the destructive US WAR with Russia over Ukraine.
The followup to the September 13 record was published on ALL SOULS DAY, November 2, 1976

Because of the Radio, TV and Newspaper coverage I got as a Canadian in Kansas City, I was arrested by the Authorities to be deported back to CanaDa as an Alien like mentioned in the opening comment.
Obviously I had no Power to influence World events to Generally unfold along the September 13 Historical record other than being a Messenger. I can’t boast other than being a Messenger and pointing to the Historical Records.
Even Christ Jesus confessed he didn’t do the works, but God in him.

    1. Yes Ray, Chris Hedges always writes great articles. Some would say polemics. But I always find reading them frustrating since he always brilliantly dissects the problem, but never comes up with any specific solutions to the problems. Take the last paragraph in your todays link….

“Our corporate overlords and militarists prefer the decorum of George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Joe Biden. But they worked closely with Donald Trump and are willing to do so again. What they will not allow are reformers such as Bernie Sanders, who might challenge, however tepidly, their obscene accumulation of wealth and power. This inability to reform, to restore democratic participation and address social inequality, means the inevitable death of the republic. Biden and the Democrats rail against the cultish Republican Party and their threat to democracy, but they too are the problem.”

Yes Chris we know all that. You have told us all this many times before. But what do you suggest we are to do about it? We surely are aware that this inability to reform, to restore democratic participation and address social inequality, means the inevitable death of the republic, but what do you suggest we do about that? Maybe other of Chris’s admirers find solution’s in his writings – but I struggle to find any.

      2. Hedges’ claim that “Biden and the Democrats rail against the cultish Republican Party and their threat to democracy, but they too are the problem” is absolutely correct, but runs into the following problem:

A significant number of Americans do NOT believe that about Biden and the Democrats; but DO believe that about Trump and the Republicans. And an equally significant number of other Americans feel exactly the same away, with only the names of the evil doers reversed.

In any event, as a Journalist, Hedges’ function, Dennis, is not to provide Solutions to the Problems he pinpoints. That’s what we have political parties, elected politicians, and government bureaucrats and appointees, media pundits and other propagandists, academicians, experts, and, when all else fails, philosophers for.

Given the fact that ~ throughout recorded history ~ the biggest, most constant and consistent source of Human Misery, Pain, and Suffering has been Government [particularly governments aligned with Organized Religion], i am prepared to argue that an obvious place to start looking for Solutions to the problems this Nation and this Planet are confronting is as follows:

Get Government out of the business of meeting Human Needs and satisfying Human Wants, and strictly into the business of protecting Human Rights and facilitating the fulfillment of Human Responsibilities.

That will require, first of all, clearly and completely distinguishing and articulating the categorical and specific difference between Human Needs and Wants, on the one hand, and Human Rights and Responsibilities, on the other.

And that will require answering the following questions [just for starters]: Are Health and Health Care Human Rights? Or are they Human Needs and Wants? What about Housing, Education, and Employment? Are these Rights; or Needs and Wants? Or Income Security, Comfortable Retirement, and Leisure?

More specifically: Are those things Human Rights in the same way and sense that Life, Liberty. Property, Privacy, and the Pursuit of Happiness are Rights, and NOT merely Needs and Wants?

And the reason that the distinction between Needs and Wants and Rights is so critical is because THE ONLY WAY ANY GOVERNMENT CAN MEET THE NEEDS AND SATISFY THE WANTS OF SOME OF ITS CITIZENS IS TO VIOLATE THE RIGHTS OF OTHER OF ITS CITIZENS.

I checked their online message and it’s vague. Talk of a balanced budget — how can this be done without major cuts that will hurt people? Also, the reference to the dangers posed by Russia and China seems conventional. So if China and Russia are very dangerous, that suggests “No Labels” won’t cut the Pentagon budget much, meaning a balanced budget is unachievable without putting a major hurt on poor and working class people.

So, I guess I’m skeptical after my quick look. What do you think?

I am skeptical, too. I got interested only because David Brooks described it as an organization with the goal of furthering a presidential candidate who is independent of the two political parties for the 2024 election if the choice is otherwise between Biden and Trump. That candidate presumably would be somebody who would draw voters from both parties. If either or both of the two established parties comes up with reasonable candidates, No Labels would withdraw and go home quietly.

It seems to me that a true “unity candidate” is what we need in 2024, – someone who can appeal to reasonable people from both camps and dampen the fervor of the extremists.

A GATHERING THAT IS TYPICALLY AMERICAN IN THAT IT IS TYPICAL OF AMERICA AT ITS BEST.
      -Teddy Roosevelt

In 1874, John Heyl Vincent and Lewis Miller rented a Methodist camp meeting site to use as a summer school for Sunday school teachers. The camp became known as the Chautauqua Institution and reflected a nation-wide interest in the professionalization of teaching. Vincent and Miller were very clear that their intent was educational, rather than revivalist, and the Chautauqua Institution was never affiliated with any one religious denomination although the sort of mild Protestantism that informed much of American culture also underpinned the Chautauqua Movement. Today, nearly every faith group in the U.S. has a chapel or building on the grounds of the New York Chautauqua.

“Where’s the outrage?” Bob Dole asked in the middle of the scandal-plagued presidency of Bill Clinton scandals. Voters, it turned out, cared more about prosperity.

But as U.S. politics has descended into tribal warfare, that blinding emotion has become the default position of both major political parties. Each sees the other side as more than outrageous – as threats to self-government itself. DEMOCRATS ARE TRUMPETING THE UPCOMING MIDTERMS AS A BATTLE FOR DEMOCRACY AGAINST THEIR “SEMI-FASCIST” ENEMIES; REPUBLICANS ARE LARGELY RUNNING ON THE PROMISE TO INVESTIGATE AND PUNISH THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION.

LOST IN THIS REVENGE PLAY POLITICS IS THOUGHTFUL DISCUSSION ABOUT HOW TO ADDRESS OUR NATION’S PRESSING PROBLEMS. Yes, politicians issue policy statements and even pass legislation, but where are their specific plans to reduce the national debt, tame brewing foreign threats, tackle crime, and whip inflation? We now know the Biden administration cynically used the name, “Inflation Reduction Act,” to drum up support for climate and health care initiatives it had failed to pass before and that had nothing to do with corralling price increases. AT A TIME WHEN ABOUT 70% OF AMERICANS BELIEVE THE COUNTRY IS ON THE WRONG TRACK, DOES ANYONE BELIEVE EITHER PARTY KNOWS HOW TO SET THINGS RIGHT?

The GOP still pretends to be the party of small government and fiscal responsibility, but IT HAS NOT ONLY FAILED BY ANY MEASURE TO ACHIEVE EITHER, IT NO LONGER EVEN TRIES. It’s just words, words, words.

Democrats have long claimed that they know how to fix things through government action, but SIX DECADES OF FAILED SOCIAL POLICIES HAVE THOROUGHLY UNDERMINED THAT NOTION.

In fact, the Cubs players and organization totally exonerated him.

It is not like ~ particularly since 9/11 ~ there have been and are no very visible, viable, and reliable alternative sources of news and information that we could turn to to eliminate that ignorance. But the overwhelming majority of us are very comfortably and voluntarily parked within our own personal and group news silos and echo chambers; hence the ignorance, hence the inattention and indolence, hence the easy prey to propaganda and manipulation. And hence the Shit Show that is American politics, government, and governance today, and has been for quite some time now.

And a very significant number of us are very willingly very much plugged into and deriving benefits from that system in which the folks with the Money ~ and who thus control the Power that is available to be bought and sold ~ call all the shots. Especially if we can figure out how to personally or professionally gain from the exercise of that Power and maybe get a little of that Free Money for ourselves.

As Frédéric Bastiat put it is his1848 essay “Government”: “Government is the great fiction through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.” [ http://bastiat.org/en/government.html and https://mises.org/library/frederic-bastiat-government ]

Something is very wrong with the way the American Experiment in a Constitutional Republic operated by a division-of-power-limited representative government of democratically-elected politicians is turning out. So wrong, in fact, that ~ on its present course ~ this Nation may not survive to celebrate its 250th birthday on July 4, 2026: a mere 1,397 days from today. Or if it survives, it may be in neither the condition nor the mood to celebrate anything.

These days the buck stops nowhere/no one takes the blame/but evil is still evil/in anybody’s name.

                4. Yes. I should have said Cubs fans, though a couple of the players were angry at him.

When the Cubs finally won the World Series, they gave Bartman a ring, one that he truly deserved, given the abuse he took.

  9. I was chilled when I first saw the images of Biden’s speech. The colors and background were intended to symbolize…what? Certainly nothing related to the “soul” of America.

The deep red lighting with dark shadows looked indeed like one of Adam Sutler’s speeches from V for Vendetta; it left the terrifying impression of a call to war – on a certain group of our citizens. And particularly with two US Marines in dress blues being used as props in a location where they are not assigned.

And what was Biden’s point? To further divide rather than unite? Who in his administration thought this was a good idea? And he is supposed to be all that stands in the way of Trump’s return in 2024?

    1. Red is the color of blood and of anger, hatred. Black is the color of nothingness and therefore of fear and death. Presumably Biden’s choice of colors reflect his inner mind. Hatred and fear. He was rousing his troops to run in the upcoming election on hatred and fear because they can’t run on his record – it’s too pathetic.

  10. ‘The Ukraine Proxy War Has Been A Propaganda Win For Interventionists’

“It’s a proud day for America, and by God, we’ve kicked the Vietnam syndrome once and for all,” the elder President Bush said after winning his war/propaganda operation in the Middle East.

Of course, we all remember what happened after that, don’t we? A decade later came 9/11, and a public now re-warmed to the idea of beneficent military interventionism overwhelmingly consented to two full-scale ground invasions of two separate nations on the promise of swift victory where the troops will be greeted as liberators. What followed was some six million deaths — roughly two thousand times the number killed on 9/11 — while trillions of dollars were siphoned from the American public to the war industry amid an unprecedented new era of military expansionism……………………………..
