Please, Joe Biden, Don’t Run in 2024

I watched Joe Biden as he tried to answer simple questions from Jimmy Kimmel and it just made me sad. Comedian Jimmy Dore skewers sputtering Joe here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iVG6-qWjXMo

And I use the word “sputtering” because Biden apologists still like to suggest that Biden’s problems are attributable to a stutter, which Biden overcame decades ago. Watch Biden speeches from the 1980s to when he was Obama’s Vice President and you hear a person who can speak fluidly, if often not honestly. Joe’s ability to speak clearly and to remain focused had obviously declined by 2020 when he campaigned. It’s likely, given the demands of the job, that his acuity will continue to trend downwards, as Ronald Reagan’s did in his second term in office.

What’s to be said here? First, it’s hard to believe Biden’s handlers thought it was a good idea for him to go on TV in a somewhat unstructured environment, but I guess they did. Second, Jimmy Kimmel showed a lot of class in not exploiting Biden’s incoherence. Third, to state what’s obvious, at least to me, Joe Biden shouldn’t run in 2024. He’s not currently up to the rigors of the duties of the office he occupies, and only Benjamin Button ages in reverse. If the DNC and Joe’s wife and family allow him to run again, it will truly be shameful.

The scary thing for true-blue Democrats is the apparent alternatives, Kamala “Giggles” Harris and “Mayor Pete” Buttigieg. They hit certain diversity targets, but neither is inspiring. Both in their own way are political lightweights. Both, however, are beloved by party operatives because they’re willing to take orders from the owners and donors. Harris is a Clintonite and Mayor Pete is the ultimate square-checking apple polisher. Here’s hoping both fade away and quickly.

Perhaps Michelle Obama will enter the fray as the great Democratic savior. At the very least, she could save Joe Biden from a possible second term that would likely be even more disappointing if not disastrous than his first term is proving to be.

Disclaimer: Sorry, this isn’t about Trump. If Trump runs again, I won’t vote for him. Why? Because Trump is a man who serves only himself. So please don’t spin my worries about Joe Biden as some kind of weird endorsement of Con Man Donald. It isn’t.

    1. Sure. And I have before. I supported Bernie Sanders and Tulsi Gabbard in 2020. They’re not perfect; no one is. But I’d support either of them over Trump or Biden in 2024.

      Hopefully, other gutsy people with integrity will emerge. The question is: If this gutsy person were to win and then truly try to drain the swamp, how long would they live?

        1. Sanders role is to remake the U.S. according to his socialist ideals, whatever that means. I think it’s a mistake to think that progressives (or socialists) want an anti-war foreign policy. That happened with Vietnam (McGovern, etc.) but not before and not since. It’s part of progressive thought to remake America and they figure why not remake the world while they’re at it. To judge by the votes in Congress on the $40 billion package for the war with Russia the only opposition to more military adventure comes from a minority wing of the Republican Party which is somewhat suspicious of foreign intervention. Like Trump, although like a lot of things he wasn’t real ideological about it. Or consistent.

          2. That’s a fair point. Certain progressives have been critical of certain wars, especially under a Republican president. Then they’ll often switch if the presidency turns Democrat. You can’t have it both ways and be a principled person. But of course they’re opportunists with spines of jelly, so flip-flopping is easy.

          1. First of all, Colonel, i’m very serious about “None Of These Candidates” as my choice for the next President of the United States. Were i able, i would launch a nationwide campaign to make NOTC a mandatory choice on every ballot in every federal election in 2024; for the reasons i explained in the article You posted back in April:

            Second of all, far more important than Who i would want to run would be the Platform with its Proposed Policies and Programs, and the Promises For Action that they ran on.

            And at this point, my choice would be the person who would start his or her campaign by asking the American People if they thought that the United States of America ~ the Bankrupt Debtor State, Imperialist Warfare State, Redistributionist Welfare State, …, Etc, ~ if they thought that that US of A was going to survive long enough to celebrate its 250th birthday.

            Unfortunately, that may very well be a moot question come 2024.

            But if it’s not, my candidate would then ask the Questions: “What is the Alternative and the Antidote to these eight EXISTENTIAL THREATS to the uniquely American Experiment with Constitutionally-limited representative government under a Rule of Law, before which all Human Beings are created equal and treated equally?

            “What changes to the American system of national government and governance ~ and the relationship of that government to the citizens of the United States, to the national and international economy, to domestic and foreign civil society, and to subordinate and foreign governments ~ what changes need to happen to bring that experiment back from the abyss of total failure?”

            1. The last time i voted for somebody to be President was the last time somebody i Really wanted to see elected President ~ ie, somebody i could actually, really vote FOR ~ was running. And that was Nader in 2004.

              i refuse to waste my vote on somebody i’m not FOR by using it to vote AGAINST somebody else, simply because the former is the lesser of two lousy choices.

              In 2020, i would have voted for Jacob Hornberger [founder and president of the Future of Freedom Foundation: https://www.fff.org%5D, had he not been screwed out of being the Libertarian Party’s nominee. But he was, and that was that for that election.

              So, if i had to pick somebody to run, i guess it would be Mr Hornberger. But i think he is accomplishing a lot more with the FFF, and thus has far more important things to do.

    2. Sadly (as it indicates a very low opinion of all politicians at present), I can’t think of anyone I’d like to see run. In 2016, it was Sanders without a doubt; and not only to stop Clinton. When he gave up & endorsed her, he caused a significant part of his support base to feel betrayed, but I pointed out that his major mistake was in running as a D and that once he did he was honor-bound to play by their rules-to which he’d agreed.
      In 2020, I again supported him, though I felt that he was making a mistake in thinking he’d get a fair chance; understanding of course the calculus in both ’16 and ’20 that running 3rd Party might make a Trump win more likely. We saw what happened in ’20, though; one thing apparent in the actions of all the candidates (save Gabbard) was that all of them, including E. Warren, were on board with the most important goal: to stop Sanders.

      His naivete alone keeps me from any aspiration that he’d run again. Then there is the vote in support of Ukraine war funding. While he has been the most consistent person in Congress when it comes to voting against the massive Defense spending bills, his caving in with language about Putin, which echoes earlier remarks about ‘the brutal dictator’ Maduro, and this vote on the $40Billion for weapons to Ukraine, have all convinced me that Sanders is either fairly ignorant and brainwashed by our deep state / neocon elements, or else an outright coward, willing to trade principle for political acceptance.

      For her part, Gabbard seems consistent on ONLY one matter, opposition to regime change wars. And I think the inconsistency is due in part to her general lack of political experience, or perhaps because as a D, she too found herself too compromised.

      So who does this leave? I can’t think of anyone that doesn’t make me cringe somewhat.

I’ve known people as sharp as a tack and still energetic into their 90s; and others, even w/o obvious dementia in their early 60s, looking close to death. But yes, 88 is probably way too late to be running a campaign for President. So, no, I don’t think he should run nor would many be able to look past the age risks. I guess I was just responding since he was mentioned… and because we’ve long needed someone of that character in office.

  3. When has politics not been the science of screwing supporters and convincing them they should appreciate it? That said, “a study in authoritarianism” has been conflated with, and then supplanted “representative government” while “party” is an eager streetwalker with a cash flow problem, but impermanence is the only constant in the universe and I want to be optimistic the clown spectacle of government is getting tiresome for a growing minority. Vote against the incumbent, preferably third party-my girl couldn’t get any goofier than the organized and coordinated liars, cheats and thieves have already made her.

  4. Some talk about H.Clinton running again. Perhaps a replay of 2016? “And this time get it right!” crows the news media in unison. I’ve seen Tulsi Gabbard on Tucker Carlson’s show. She’s relatively impressive on foreign policy. But running as a peace candidate she would have no chance. Not yet anyway. Maybe by then we’ll be tired of yet another war although I think it will be too soon for that. Lastly I think it’s disappointing that the “progressive” party keeps sending out retreads. Don’t they know what that word means?

      1. I continue to believe our candidates are basically chosen by the news media. The NY Times endorsed McCain for the Republican nomination in 2008 and it became so, even though the Times is hardly a Republican paper. Mainstream media was very excited about Trump for 2016 because they thought he would be the weakest Republican candidate, he was nominated, and then they turned against him in favor of Hillary. Too late! The momentum was too much, Trump was elected and the media never forgave themselves for helping elect him. The news media can spin anything to their desired outcome. Look at how our war with Russia is unfolding to see that in action.

  5. Governor Charlie Baker, a Republican, has done a decent job running the generally liberal state of Massachusetts. He’s definitely no Trumper. I’d give him a long look in 2024, but I don’t think he’s running.

    Politics is so loathsome that it seems to favor and attract swamp creatures and sociopathic narcissists.

  9. I fully agree with you, If Biden runs I won’t vote for him(I’d probably vote Green), and I spoke with a friend in Detroit who is black and he said the same thing. Frankly I’m surprised Biden is as high in the polls as he is (and I know he’s low )I would expect him to be lower based on the opinions of those I know. I would prefer Bernie, but he too would be over 80 if he ran and although I think he is as sharp as ever, I don’t think an 80 plus year old has the physical stamina to be president. I agree too that Kamala would be a disaster, along with everyone I can name (though I don’t know them all) who is in Biden’s cabinet. The person I hope will run is Elizabeth Warren. She has the smarts and also good ideas. I’m surprised the commenters before me haven’t mentioned her- is there something about her that I am missing?
    I’m so glad you wrote this, I look forward to seeing what others think, and your comments.

    1. Warren is a senator in my state. For some reason I can’t get enthused about her, I think because of her careful triangulation and her obedience to the Democratic Party. Also, as Dennis noted above, her posturing as a Native American really hurt her credibility, and her decision to take a DNA test, which revealed she’s no more than 1/32 of that heritage, if that, makes you wonder about her judgment.

      She didn’t catch fire in 2020; I doubt she will in 2024. She’d probably lose badly if Trump were her opponent.

  10. Joe Biden, by all accounts, is a very stubborn man who is easily angered. So, the talk of the Dems choosing someone else strikes me as wishful thinking if he sets his mind on running again in 2024 – if just to show others he decides for himself what he’s going to do.

    I would like to think Jill Biden could convince him otherwise, but she was opposed to Giggles Harris, and Biden still picked her. So, it seems increasingly likely Trump will be reelected in 2024, barring a health issue (in that case, DeSantis will be the alternative).

    In answer to the first set of comments on who you would pick. I fear that cupboard is bare. Both the Clintons and Obamas have limited other voices in an effort to preserve their legacies or promote their own future opportunities. I fear Hillary is going to hang on to power long enough to promote the campaign of Chelsea.

Young, smart, incredible stage presence, and with a platform 80% of Americans Agree with. Anti-war, Universal Healthcare, raise the minimum wage, gun control, etc etc etc.

    The People Party could do a lot worse in picking a candidate.

And for someone who lived in the USA for 41-years saying this makes me really sad. I just got out of hospital here in New Zealand and never saw a bill. Free ambulance. Never paid a cent. Not one minute wasted with filling out insurance forms. Either by the hospital staff or me.

    (I’m dumping this “left-right” silliness. It no longer has a meaning in America.)
    My goal today, with my too many comments and links, was just to show that every Democratic candidate we know of has very little chance against TRUMP and the Republican machine in 2024. (Is anybody brave enough to predict TRUMP will not be the Republican candidate?)
    Its obvious today and will become more and more obvious as Biden stumbles through two more years.
    And the “do-nothing” Democratic party literally destroys the country.

  24. At this point, i do not see the problem as being WHO the President is.

    The problem is the power and the authority that that individual has ~ on behalf of his owners and operators thru their script writers and handlers ~ once he gets into the Oval Office. That’s a good part of the reason why more than $7 BILLION was spent on the 2020 election for President [and another $7 BILLION on Congressional races].

    The problem confronting America is a system of government and governance that is built, maintained, and sustained to enable selected special interests to have unfettered access to the power and authority of government to manage, manipulate, and/or control national foreign and domestic military, political, economic, social, and cultural policies and programs.     Just like Slavery, the opportunities for special interest control of the government were built into the original Constitution, and those folks have seldom missed an opportunity to take full advantage of the possibilities presented. The Anti-Federalists warned us about all this back then, but to no avail.

  25. With all respect to the elderly there should be an age limit to be an elected official. Sixty, to be able to retire by 65. We need the young people to get more involved, it’s their world going forward.

    1. It’s tough to set an age limit since we all age differently. Some people are spry and sharp into their 70s and 80s.

      Still, I agree an age limit would be a good idea, since people like Pelosi and McConnell and Feinstein hang on until they’re at death’s door.

      Perhaps 70 or 72 could be the maximum age, and for SCOTUS as well, with the idea that turnover and fresh blood is needed in a vibrant democracy.

      Of course, this idea will go nowhere because of Pelosi et al.

      2. Imposing a limit would force politicians to concentrate more on continuity through substitution. If you are 70, the decisions you make will mostly after other, younger people. We need mor young people making decisions for their future.

      3. The biggest advantage of Term Limits is that it will, almost by itself, take care of the problem of Old Farts being in office; thereby eliminating the need for Age Limits.

        The biggest obstacle to and opponents of Age Limits for elected federal office holders and judges will be those who are starting to get “older” ~ if not “old” ~ and have visions of perpetuity of their own.

  27. I agree that Biden, Harris and Buttagieg should not run and could not win. Amy Klobuchar has demonstrated strong legislative effectiveness as a Senator and was gaining traction in the 2020 primaries before everyone conceded the race to Biden and I think remains the strongest candidate Democrats have.

      1. Health care providers make money off insurance from the private sector but lose money from government insurance. In other words private companies are subsidizing Medicare and even more so Medicaid. I’m sure though they would love to be released of the burden through Medicare for all. But Medicare prices would have to go up, taxes would have to go up, or else the government would be even more in debt if they were to simply add it to the tab. We’re already at $30 Trillion debt vs $24 Trillion GDP. And adding about a trillion in debt every year. Oh joy (sarcasm).

              And pushed for Congressional action on it.

                The study that is referenced in the above Kyle Kulinski video, that shows a S5.1-trillion saving, was based on analysing a Bill before Congress: H.R.1976 – Medicare for All Act of 2021.
                This Bill was not written by Bernie Sanders. He had next to no input in that.
                It was written by a Congressional Committee and staff. And Cosponsored by 121-Congressmen.
                So to say it was “Bernie’s Promise” is not right.
                Is that better?
                And it is a fact that it would save the US a bundle over its current dysfunctional private insurance scheme.

        2. Alex, I have what is called Medicare Advantage, a program that farms out Medicare through private insurance companies paying them to participate. It is a government subsidy of companies already in a very profitable business, letting them in on the Medicare program while protecting their profits, but more than that, read on.

          I recently had to have a crown put on a molar. My MA program through AETNA, paid $1000 of the $1650 fee. The dental office person told me that regular Medicare pays nothing for crowns and because she handles the paperwork for the patients in this dental office, I believe she is telling the truth. Here is a clear example of a private company doing so well off of Uncle Sam that it can hand out $1000 for my crown that Uncle Sam on his own will not. I pay nothing for Medicare Advantage, so AETNA gets nothing from me.

          Wouldn’t you agree that this pass through of money behind the scenes makes a private company look good and would tend to induce more people to sign up for Medicare Advantage? Why is it in the public interest for the government to not only be adding to private company profits, but promoting more sign-ups for Medicare Advantage in this way?

          Your claim, unsupported, is that private companies are subsidizing Medicare. Can you give an example of that?

  29. I generally prefer governors to senators or congressmen. At least governors have had to run something. And I prefer people with substantial experience in the private sector. Biden went into politics almost immediately after getting his law degree and never looked back. Which is part of his problem. He has no understanding of the private sector. You know, like the people who drill for oil and who process food and stuff like that. He is a very narrowly educated person. For him government is always the answer. Except for finger-pointing of course. Then he involves the private sector.

I didn’t really have a problem with Trump aside from the fact that he liked to argue with reporters and pick Twitter fights with people. He was cutting back on Federal regulations and the economy responded. His Covid response was somewhat disjointed in large part because he put it in the hands of the Washington public health care bureaucracy but at least we got vaccines in record time. And he was getting us out of foreign wars and was asking basic questions about NATO, efforts that probably got him tanked. You can’t act against the Blob. You remember those Star Trek episodes with the Borg? Borg, Blob. See the similarity?

    EVERY other industrialised nation in the World has some form of Universal Single Payer Healthcare.
    It works for them – the cheapest and best way to provide medical care for EVERY citizen.
    Proven everyday here in New Zealand. There are zero medical bill bankruptcy’s in NZ, unlike in the US.
    Its only the crass ignorance of American Exceptionalism that prevents US citizens from having the same.
