Playing the Fool in Afghanistan

W.J. Astore

Today, I’d like to revive an article I wrote in July of 2010 about America’s folly in continuing its war in Afghanistan. Here we are, a decade later, and the Biden administration is contemplating continuing that war. Stupidity is obviously unbounded.

Anyway, as Julian Assange rots in prison for the crime of doing journalism, it behooves us to recall that WikiLeaks provided convincing evidence of America’s Afghan folly. Obviously, Assange the messenger must be shot, or at least punished severely for daring to air America’s dirty laundry.

Here’s my post from 2010. Does it make any sense in any universe to keep this going?

What WikiLeaks Reveals: We’re Playing the Fool in Afghanistan

07/27/2010

Perhaps the most predictable, as well as the most maddening, headline to emerge from the latest WikiLeaks controversy is this one from the Washington Post: “WikiLeaks Disclosures Unlikely to Change Course of Afghanistan War.”

Doubtless this “stay the course” approach will be spun as a sign of American resolve and tenacity. Of course, it was Albert Einstein who defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Naturally, there’ll be some who’ll say that Obama and General Petraeus have new cards up their sleeves, so perhaps they’re not “insane.” But they (and we) sure are looking more and more like fools.

Partly this is because President Obama and his advisors are still looking at Afghanistan as a problem to be solved, a war to be won, a situation to be handled. Or they see it as a high-stakes poker match, a deadly game of raises and bluffs, of gambling at long odds, but a match we can ultimately win as long as we keep playing and pumping in more chips.

But what if Afghanistan is none of these? What if we’re playing the fool?

Recall how proud we were, in the 1980s, at providing arms and aid to the Afghan “freedom fighters” who were then fighting the Soviets. It was the Soviet Union’s own Vietnam, we said, the final nail in the coffin of Soviet communism, and we congratulated ourselves on our own cleverness.

Fast forward two decades, and now we’re the ones bogged down in Afghanistan, yet we still think we can “surge” or escalate or otherwise rescue a faltering and untenable war effort.

Faltering? Untenable? Few people will dispute the following facts, many of which are now further supported by the WikiLeaks documents:

1. We’ve already spent $300 billion on our war in Afghanistan with very little to show for it.

2. Year after year, we’ve been training the Afghan National Army and police, with very little to show for it.

3. We’ve almost completely eliminated Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, the immediate cause of our intervention in 2001, yet we continue to send more troops and more money there.

4. We’ve allied ourselves with a corrupt government and leaders who are enriching themselves at our expense.

5. We pay bribes to protect our convoys, and some of this money ends up in the hands of the Taliban.

6. We’re working with a regional ally, Pakistan, whose interests are often contrary to our own, and yet whose allegiance we attempt to buy with more military aid.

7. In trying to win the hearts and minds of ordinary Afghans, we’ve largely looked the other way with respect to the opium and heroin trade. The result? A drug-based Afghan economy.

8. In fighting an American-style war, we’ve relied on massive firepower, often from the air, that inevitably results in civilian casualties that undermine our counterinsurgency efforts.

9. At a time when we’re still trying to create jobs and pull ourselves out of a Great Recession, we continue to dedicate tens of billions of dollars to a seemingly endless war, with Congress currently preparing to approve yet another $33.5 billion for Afghanistan.

10. While largely ignoring civilian casualties in Afghanistan, we also downplay the cost of constant warfare to our troops, not just those who are killed or wounded in action (horrible as that price is), but to those who are brutalized by war, those whose families are destroyed or damaged by constant deployments, by domestic violence, and by suicides. Yet we reassure ourselves this price is bearable since our troops are “all volunteers.”

These are hard facts, and the WikiLeaks evidence has only made them harder. Only a fool refuses to face facts, and hardheaded Americans are not fools.

Or are we?

  1. Spot on. On October 7th we’ll ‘celebrate’ 20 years of enduring US/NATO occupation, ground hog day over and over and over again.
As for Biden calling Putin a killer, it’s beyond words. Not because Putin isn’t one, but because he at least makes an effort to individually assassinate the specific individuals who for whatever reasons got in his cross hairs. While Biden, just like all three of his predecessors, prefers to simply drop a drone bomb, killing in the process countless innocent bystanders. What if Putin did the same, for instance in the UK where he supposedly had people ‘eliminated’ ? As for mass bombing in foreign countries they are the proverbial black pot & kettle, although I’m not sure at all that Putin killed more ‘others’ than the US in the same twenty years.

    1. My heart cries for the Afghan people. I went to Pakistan and Afghanistan in 1987 to aid the refugees and saw the brutality of war. I also met the proto-Taliban who wanted to kill me except for my Afghan body guards. I asked them why they hated Americans so much. They said Americans were trying to corrupt their society with materialism and lack of devotion to God ( Allah ).
I wonder how things might have been if we had honored their culture and religion. How much of the Taliban would be left if we invested the billions of dollars in social and economic programs instead of war? Young men want respect which is hard to come by if one does not have a profession or an income. Now respect comes out of the barrel of a Kalashnikov. My heart cries for the people of Afghanistan.

      1. Thank you. So does mine. You might want toread this, it won’t soothe your heart as the story is yet another summum of callousness (this time from the Greek government) but inside it you’ll find a link to a lovely film made by an Afghan family of refugees during their journey to Europe. It probably will not stay there for long, so don’t miss it.

      2. You’ve nailed it, Dr. Scott, imho. “We” Americans arrogantly assume that we know what’s best for every other nation, meanwhile totally disregarding their customs and history. How can we expect to positively interact with other peoples when we’re a deliberately corrupting influence and show zero respect?

      3. Dr. Scott, your pain reached out saddened my being tonight as I read your story. I wondered how things might have been also, if Americans had honored their commitment to the Christian Creator and placed our focus on materialism under the guidance of the Creators Holy Spirit. I’m willing to bet that we would be welcome relief to nations in need; instead of scorned for our hypocrisy. Thank you for your sacrifice of service; you were a beautiful blessing and wonderful representation of America’s better nature.

  2. Unfortunately, I think 10 years from now this same piece will be run on the 20th anniversary of the original post. No politician or general officer is going to want to be the one who was said to have “lost Afghanistan”, and with the cupidity of the various companies making money from the war, as well as the seeming indifference of the majority of our citizens, the suffering will continue indefinitely.

    Words just seem inadequate.

    1. Yes. Domestic politics is a major, often the major, driver of these foolish wars.

Must seem “manly” and “tough” even as we throw $40 billion a year and countless lives (mostly Afghan) away.

But since I’ve been enrolled in classes run by Tom Engelhardt, WJ Astore, and Danny Sjursen; I have come to understand that military brass stand watch over the corporate boardrooms of munitions manufactures after leaving their lofty perches within our militaristic pantheon. Each effectively playing the long game of stalling their way to financial security while captaining the team on the battlefield. Then passing the baton to other like minded leaders; who committed to and pledged allegiance to the very same obstruction maneuvers . It was a creative investment into their future retirement accounts. Devising nation sized dumpsters and graveyards for future campaigns to recycle and bury our newfangled weapons over and over and over again. Keeping the manufacturing numbers and productivity for MIC contractors at all time highs; and the profit margins ever expanding. The golden goose of all retirement packages. For Wall Street investors and the Decorated Armament Sentries ; who figured out the game and are guarding its future fortunes well.
Of course we’re not leaving…we signed an open ended lease on these lands and paid the landlords well ….
Lo$ing i$ winning and we are $o very good at keeping our $talling tactic$ so cleverly hidden from a patriotic public, who are so very willing to fund our future retirement ne$t egg$….
All the while paying off our “for the people” lawmakers, who are so busy crafting legislation that keeps strategically forgetting to levy a windfall profits tax upon the gilded masters of war.

  3. Here’s the excuse that drives me nuts it is so absurd:

“We’ve got to be able to assure the world and the American public that Afghanistan will not be a source of planning, plotting to project terrorist attacks around the globe,” Sen. Jack Reed, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, recently told reporters. “That’s the minimum. I’m not sure we can do that without some presence there.”

If anyone wants to undertake such planning, they can do it anywhere in the world at any time. It can be done at a Starbuck’s right here at home, or in a public library or in someone’s house or maybe at rest stop on an interstate highway (continue entries in this list beyond counting). And the man voicing this foolish statement is chairmen of the Senate Armed Services Committee!

    1. Excellent analysis and deconstruction of some truly bat-shit-crazy “logic” by Senator Jack Reed. Too bad for him that he doesn’t have his brain-dead buddy, the late John McCain, around to weep and wail about the peasant goat herders and poppy farmers “following us home” if we do not first travel to their home where they can kill us without having to go anywhere.

Timothy McVeigh, for example, did not have to travel to Afghanistan in order to conceive the notion of blowing up the Oklahoma City Federal Building with a homemade truck-bomb made from petroleum-based fertilizer. And the 9/11 Saudi hijackers, for their part, (1) plotted their suicidal mission in Hamburg, Germany, (2) learned to fly US commercial jet airliners at American flight simulator schools, (3) purchased their box-cutter “weapons” at US stationary stores, (4) bought their passenger tickets at US airline counters, and (5) boarded their fully fueled “bombers” at East Coast US airports. Afghanistan — its people and government — had nothing to do with any of this. Erstwhile “terrorists” wishing to attack the US can usually find everything they need for the job right in the US itself, especially since the “Can’t Identify Anything” CIA, “Furtive Bungling Imbeciles” FBI, and Lunatic Leviathan US military will manage not to provide one iota of “defense” in any event.

Furthermore, if any place on Planet Earth qualifies to host wannabe “terrorists” — whose ranks include POTUS and the Joined Chefs of Stuff — I can’t think of a better place for them to do their “plotting” and “scheming” than the remote, landlocked foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. You simply can’t get further away from civilization than Afghanistan. US taxpayers could also save themselves trillions of dollars by offering to transport these homicidal psychopaths there for free. Perhaps these mendacious maniacs of ours could even get part-time work herding goats and harvesting poppies for the Afghans.

The fabulously floundering United States could surely use something, anything resembling a sane and competent government not filled to overflowing with ravenous thieves. But obviously lacking any such thing, the foreign “terrorists” who “hate us for our freedoms” have little to do except stand aside and watch as our own government (1) loots our poor pockets of every last dime (2) assiduously takes away any remaining freedoms (so that no terrorist on earth would have any reason for which to hate us), and (3) wait for the poverty draft US enlisted man or woman to come blundering on scene where killing him or her won’t require much in the way of weaponry or intelligence.

The United States has pretty much gone belly up at this point. Way past time for a confiscatory 100% War Profits Tax along with demobilization of the Blundering Behemoth US military. For starters . . .

    2. What Sen. Jack Reed can’t admit is that America’s “presence” in Afghanistan (constant bombing, drones, mercenaries) is more likely to generate blowback that ends in terrorist attacks against the U.S.

Want to reduce terrorism around the world? Downsize America’s military presence globally. Withdraw troops from fighting in Afghanistan, Syria, and elsewhere.

      1. Ah, but your unassailably logical plan is objectionable to Senator Reed and his like-minded majority on two fronts: employing it would take money out of the hands of war profiteers; and it makes sense. The latter quality is probably more antithetical than the former.

    3. Chairmen with darts and a global dartboard have been busy deciding where the next plots are planned. The dart that is protruding from Afghanistan is permanently stuck and buried to the tail feathers; there seems to be a lack of strength and courage to even attempt its extraction. Their globe has over 800 protruding darts indicating possible threats. The game of darts is a very ancient practice that wise chairmen tell us is more accurate than any quantum formulation. There is an endless supply of darts to this no end game.
Anywhere at anytime ….. that’s the intelligence report that they don’t want us to see. Because that reasoning is the beginning of wisdom.

  5. Bill, thanks again for persistently pointing out your concerns most people should take to heart.
It’s too bad your wife won’t let you run for Congress.
That being the case, maybe you should hook up with Danny Sjurgen who taught History at West Point and his network of Vets for Peace, along with Tom Engelhardt, William J Scott, Denise, UTEJACK , Michael Murry, and many others, to start a much needed 3rd Party, The Peace Party or The Make Love not War Party, I believe the majority of Americans are ripe for and ready for that kind of Party to appear in these Times.

It’s one thing playing the fool in Afghanistan, but it’s even more dangerous and reckless playing the fool with Russia and China that if pushed to the limit, will end Civilization as we know it, leading to a post Apocalyptic World.

It was certainly the Blind Arrogance of Power when Blinken said provocatively to the Chinese, “The alternative to a rules-based order is a world in which might makes right and winner takes all and that would be a far more violent and unstable world”
The Chinese and Russians will laugh at that preposterous allegation because that’s what America does in the vain attempt to control this World in place of Almighty God.

Now that Biden characterized Putin as a killer without a soul, he has no fear of heaven or hell, and that American attitude will force Russia and China even closer together in the face of US aggression.

Of course Americans forgot the US went to the UN Security Council asking for the Legal Authority to invade Iraq and remove Saddam because US Intelligence, and not having the Intelligence, said Saddam had Weapons of Mass Destruction which was a LIE. That Legal Authority was denied.

Having the delusional belief in it’s own indispensable exceptionalism, the US invaded anyway, in violation of International Law, undermining the Global Order as represented by the United Nations since WWII, ushering in the Law of the Jungle to the Middle East and the World.

The US Power Elites do this to distract Americans from examining the real danger unfolding in the US perpetrated by Americans, not Russians or Chinese, under US noses.

Foreign Policy Magazine, the propaganda arm of the Council on Foreign Relations, the premier Think Tank influencing US policy, just said this,
“A Chinese Communist Party that fears its power or control is slipping could become more aggressive in the near term.

The reality these Days is, A US that fears its power or control is slipping could become more aggressive in the near term as Blinken displayed at Anchorage this week.

If the US pushes it, the FIRE and FURY like this World has never seen Trump put on the table, making CURRENT this 2600 year old Biblical Prophecy, will happen in OUR Times,
For behold, the Lord shall come with FIRE, and like a tempest,
His chariots, to render His anger with FURY, and His rebuke with flames of FIRE.

This is the form that FIRE and FURY will take, never possible before in Human History.

I watched that made for TV movie ‘THE DAY AFTER’ Kansas City was incinerated in a Nuclear Holocaust when it was shown on TV November 20, 1983. It was made in Kansas City, when it could have been made in any big American City.

I was most probably the only person on earth to notice at THE END, the movie pauses at the same picture frame The Kansas City Times used in the 2nd report on my visit to the City for the 1976 Republican National Convention.
They chose to publish on November 2, 1976, aka ALL SOULS DAY, and the TV movie appeared 7 years later to the month.

This is the screen shot from that movie, and the video clip.

Having that personal experience, I would hope you would understand my concerns seeing the Signs of the Times unfolding these Days

  6. I have to clarify something in the November 2, Kansas City Times record above.
It wasn’t fake news, but mistaken news, to quote me saying “America and the World have but 28 more months to mend their ways before Armageddon” I never said that.

The September 13 Kansas City Times record written by another Reporter reports what I said accurately.
¨There are 30 months before the fate of the world will be sealed with EITHER Destruction OR the Universal Brotherhood of Man,¨ he said. ¨The 30 month figure concerned a Treaty between Israel and Egypt.¨

NOTE: This DOES NOT SAY Armageddon happens in 30 months from the article.

Not 29 or 31, but exactly 30 months later, in March 1979, history shows a Treaty between Israel and Egypt was signed. The Camp David Accord.
History shows talks broke down on the 12th day and no Treaty was to be signed. Begin and Sadat were leaving.
It was on the 13th Day, as in the date of the September 13 article and the picture accompanying it you see upstream in the ALL SOULS DAY report, an unexpected window of opportunity appeared and opened the way for the Treaty to be signed.
This signified the Universal Brotherhood part of the quote.

The possible destruction part came into view the month earlier with the 1979 Iranian Revolution, and these 2 Generations later, it’s still on the table.

That September 13 report has these excerpts from it.
“He came to town for the Republican National Convention and will stay until the election in November TO DO GOD’S BIDDING: To tell the World, from Kansas City, this country has been found wanting and its days are numbered […] He gestured toward a gleaming church dome. “The gold dome is the symbol of BABYLON” he said.” […] He wanted to bring to the Public’s attention an “idea being put out subtly and deceptively” by the government that we have to get prepared for a war with Russia”
With Biden’s approach to Russia he is displaying, we may be closer to that than most people dare think.

That 1976 FUTURE is NOW with the Revelation of the details GENERALLY unfolding in the spirit of the letter.
Few will recognize, “this country has been found wanting and its days are numbered” are the first 2 parts of the 3 part ‘Writing On The Wall’ from Daniel 5, acknowledges as the END TIMES Prophet, reporting on the decline of Babylon/Iraq and the rise of Persia/Iran.

While Daniel wrote it during the Babylonian Captivity, he’s buried in an Islamic Mosque in Iran.

God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
    Hebrews 2:4

From what I have seen from everybody frequenting this Blog, you might understand, with this personal experience, the struggles I have in my personal Faith these 45 years later, trying to make sense of it all in a skeptical Society.

    1. I know this for sure Ray. If leadership had as deep and abiding faith in attending to their inner relationship with the Holy Spirit that you have been nurturing most all of your born days; we would not be facing the threat of nuclear holocaust and the end of life on this beautiful creation that was freely provided for the sustenance of all.
It’s one thing to possess such horrific destructive power. But to speak like a schoolyard bully to another who also has planet altering potential is preposterous.
I believe there are many who have been following the unique souls who have fashioned the EMN; and understand completely that all the tinder needed to create the conflagration that the Apostle John describes in the Revelation is available at the touch of a button at this very moment . You sense the foolish skepticism and you have every right to be fearfully concerned because of this reality.
It stops my mind knowing we cannot decide to halt a tired, dead end military conflict that is beyond stale. My mind goes blank knowing that since we cannot even disengage from these lost campaigns; there is nothing that assures me we will be able to resist the tidal forces that are carrying us all to the shores of a nuclear apocalypse.
Skeptics reflexively cheer when new military budgets surmount the previous high. It means more nuclear might and assured dominance. All the while never understanding that eventually after the nuclear rockets red glare… there will be nothing left to dominate. Keep preaching to the lost sheep; make believers out of the skeptics while you still have breath….the gospel of peace and love is the way… the truth … and the light of life…
Here’s a couple lyrics from The Doors and Dylan…. these have always haunted me….
The futures uncertain and The End is always near….

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread..

      1. Thank you Jack, for the encouragement, but let me assure you, I am not fearfully concerned out of any fear of Death, since I’ve had over 2 Generations getting prepared Spiritually, Mentally and Emotionally for the possibility of a post Apocalyptic World. It just seems to be such an unnecessary tragedy money loving Materialistic Humanity will bring upon itself.

The Christian World dismisses one of the most important fundamentals of the Faith,
And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God has given me.
        Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
        Hebrews 2:13-15

As for this insight in the September 13, 1976 Kansas City Times Historical record,
“There are 30 months before the fate of the world will be sealed with EITHER Destruction OR the Universal Brotherhood of Man,¨ the Christ said ‘But of that day and that hour no man knows, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
        Mark 13:32

Even though all the leading indicators suggest those in Power are opting for the Path of destruction, I still have hope all the worst images of THE END in the Bible can be averted because of this record concerning the destruction of that World City Nineveh some 3000 years ago recorded in the Book of Jonah.
He was sent to the City to warn them if they did not change their ways, they were on the Path to destruction. He tried to get away from doing that but when he came to his senses, did what had to be done.

The record says Nineveh was so big, it took 3 Days to walk through it. Without any Mass Media, it took only 1 and a half Days for the City to head the warning, and everyone from the king on down resolved to change their destructive ways.
The Book says ‘And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do to them; and he did it not.’

To date, I have not seen or heard any Religious Leader having a mass audience, from the Pope on down, to acknowledge the Sign of the Times of the Path to Destruction this World is on, when in 2014, ISIS blew up the Islamic Mosque in Nineveh, Iraq, containing the Tomb of Jonah, making it a CURRENT warning. The Pope missed that opportunity with his recent visit to Iraq.

I view it as important because of this record,
‘Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from you.
But he answered and said to them, An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonah:
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
        Matthew 12:38-40 & Matthew 16:1-4

Combine that with what the Apostle Peter wrote 2 Peter 3:8,
‘But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.’
By that measure of Time in this Year of the Lord 2021, the World has arrived at that third Day Matthew refers to above.

        1. I was thinking about you this morning Ray as I was reading Wolin’s ….Politics and Vision. It’s a book that Chris Hedges recommenced reading when I first discovered him . I started going over it again because that’s how my mind seems to understand things; the first time through it misses much; I always felt I was a bear of little brains. But this time through I’m doing better at grasping some of the concepts. I just finished the chapter on Martin Luther and it was preceded by the relationship of The Early Church with political thought that existed up until the time of Luther.
The early church seemed to isolate itself from the political world and were relying on their personal relationship with the Holy Spirit to establish their community. Politics would be birthed from a higher perspective and community relationships would be established because of Christ’s compelling love. It seems we are no longer able to put that loving nature at the pinnacle of our thought processes and adjust our decisions accordingly. Political ideologies have bullied our true nature into a corner of the room where peace and love have become fashionable wallflowers that we pluck and place in our lapel to display to others and remind them that we possess some semblance of respectability. But, in reality we have lost touch with the active nature of the Holy Spirit; because it has been marginalized for so many years that it has become a long forgotten truth.
I feel most impressed in all my personal relationships to remind people to honestly and diligently seek out their true nature. Find out where you fit in your realization with The Holy Spirit. Encouraging people to find out more about this most important point of being alive. From my humble perspective it is only then that they will ever stop seeing “Others”; and begin to realize that we are here to serve one another in the example Christ so beautifully defined. It’s such a liberating awareness and once attained the things of this world will pale in comparison. Right action becomes so much more meaningful and one treads very lightly and cautiously upon the earth. For those who are the least bit interested; the contrasts today should be stark and very obvious. Our societies imbalance is naked and exposed. Sharing messages which sow the seeds of peace and brotherly love will resonate in these dark polluted times. Just like in the times of Nineveh it will be the change of individual hearts that will facilitate the necessary societal structures adjustment. The Holy Spirit is willing waiting and wanting to provide the power to accomplish these things. It’s our reason for being to get others to seek the unifying Love which is so very much needed. Changing hearts changes political perspective and that’s the battlefield we toil in today.

          2. The citation above should read John 13:13-15

For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
For circumcision verily profits, if you keep the law: but if you be a breaker of the law, your circumcision is made uncircumcision.
Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfill the law, judge you, who by the letter and circumcision does transgress the law?

For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and CIRCUMCISION IS THAT OF THE HEART, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
